Day three of the Camino was unlike anything I had ever experienced. The rain fell in relentless sheets, soaking me to the bone and seeping into every layer of clothing until I was chilled to my core. Every uphill climb felt like a battle against gravity itself; each step burned my legs and stole my breath, yet I pressed on.
I crossed train lines slick with rain, the steel shining up at me through thick fog that blurred the path ahead. Forest trails twisted through mud so slippery that every misstep threatened to undo the progress I had fought so hard to make. Blisters tore at my feet, muscles screamed, and my body begged for reprieve. And still, I moved forward.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I could almost smell the hot shower and hear the fizz of a glass of prosecco waiting for me at the end - a small, vivid beacon that lit the path forward when every fibre of my body wanted to surrender.
That thought - that vision, became fuel. It reminded me that perseverance often comes from holding onto something greater than the discomfort of the moment.
Walking all 26 kilometres through that storm became a powerful metaphor for transformative leadership. In education, the storms we face aren’t always physical, but they’re just as relentless: unexpected crises, conflicting priorities, resistant systems, and moments of uncertainty that test both our courage and our conviction. There’s always the temptation to take shelter, to pause until the conditions improve, to retreat from discomfort.
But transformative leadership isn’t about waiting for perfect conditions, it’s about stepping into the storm with clarity, courage, and conviction. It’s about moving forward when the path is muddy and fogged over, making hard decisions when every step feels uncertain, and modelling resilience so that others find the strength to persevere.
The Camino reminded me that leadership is as much about vision as it is about action. That thought of a shower and a glass of prosecco wasn’t just a comfort, it was a goal, a North Star. In leadership, our North Star might be a mission, a shared vision, or the growth and development of those we serve.
It’s what gives us purpose when the rain falls, when the uphill climb feels endless, and when the path ahead is hidden in fog. Each deliberate step, each moment of pushing through discomfort, shapes not only our own character but also the courage, confidence, and resilience of those we lead.
Transformative leadership is forged in moments of challenge, in decisions made despite uncertainty, and in the courage to continue when retreat seems easier. By facing the storm, guiding others through it, and staying focused on the vision ahead, leaders transform not only themselves but also the communities they serve.
And just like reaching the end of that 26-kilometre walk, the sense of accomplishment, growth, and transformation is profound, unforgettable, and worth every muddy, painful, drenched step along the way.
